Coffee, first introduced in the 15th century, has now turned into a billion dollar industry. The growth in the demand for coffee should hardly come as a surprise, given our everyday hectic schedule. Research shows that more than 150 million Americans (18 or older) drink coffee on a daily basis. Coffee is not only a delicious, essential beverage but is also a part of our history. Here are some interesting facts about coffee from around the world:

  1. Finland is the highest coffee consuming country in the world. According to statistics from the International Coffee Organization (ICO), Finland grinds a whooping amount of 12kg beans per person, per year.
  2. In Canada, coffee accounted for 67 percent of the hot drinks market in 2014.
  3. According to ICO, Brazil ships 5.7bn pounds of coffee every year, making it the world’s biggest exporter for 150 years in a row.
  4. The first webcam was invented because of the intense need for a hot pot of coffee! In 1991, late-night schedules were common for Dr. Quentin Stafford-Fraser and Paul Jardetzky. In order to stay up, it was important for them to keep the coffee pot full. However, they got tired of walking to the pot in the other room and always finding the pot empty. As a result of wanting to avoid the emotional distress, the two students from Cambridge University invented the world’s first webcam.
  5. According to a list made by US CNBC, Seattle has the maximum number of coffee shops per head. It has 1640 coffee shops as of July 2011, which means approximately one coffee shop per 2,200 people.
  6. Coffee plants have full, red colored berries but because of the seeds within, coffee berries are shaped like a bean. That is why, they are commonly known as ‘coffee beans’. Additionally, these berries are consumable in nature.
  7. It is believed that tea was discovered by the accidental fall of tea leaves in a steaming cup of hot water. Similarly, it is believed that a goat herder, while grazing his goats, had the sudden realization that the goats became more energetic after eating certain berries.
  8. Black Ivory Coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world and can cost up to $50 per cup. This coffee is produced from the Thai elephant’s consumption and part-digestion of Arabica coffee beans.
  9. Coffee is the third most consumed beverage after water and tea, respectively.
  10. Coffee was first introduced in India in Chikmagalur, now known as the coffee land of Karnataka. The city is located at the foothills of Mullayanagiri range and is one of the most famous hill stations in Karnataka.
